Preserving the Past

Restoring Vici’s M-K-T Depot

Vici, Oklahoma | Fall 2021

The Town of Vici seeks to preserve the history and create a legacy for future generations of its 1910 train depot that continually hosted the railroad from 1912 through 1971. This train depot was a regular stop on the Missouri-Kansas-Texas rail line. Although it was formally named the M-K-T Depot, it soon acquired the nickname of the “Katy Depot”. Leaders in Vici, Oklahoma applied for assistance from the University of Oklahoma Institute for Quality Communities (IQC) in Spring 2021. IQC is an outreach program from the Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture. IQC collaborated with the Divisions of Environmental Design, Regional and City Planning, Architecture and Interior Design for this project. Students brought talents and skillsets from their respective disciplines to create a well-rounded project proposal with a multi-faceted approach. The assessment of the current conditions of the depot, preservation methodologies and historic depot paint colors, placemaking, interior repurpose proposals for depot. A digital archive will also be relayed to Vici as a deliverable of this project, as the goal of this book is to provide a digestible format research finding, preservation recommendations, repurpose proposals, funding resources, and actionable next steps.
